Question:

Why aren't there more Garfield Sobers style "all round" bowlers in cricket?

Gary Sobers used to ball left arm fast medium with the new and old ball, as well as left arm orthodox spin/slow left arm, and left arm chinaman. Why aren't more bowlers encouraged to develop all round bowling skills? Wouldn't that lend more variety to a bowling attack and not require teams to worry about whether to pick 4 quickies and no spinners, 3 fast and one spin, or 2 and 2 of each? Why is it that Sachin Tendulkar and Andy Symonds are the only players today who bowl both spin and pace (plus Tendulkar bowls everything off the same run up). Why don't coaches encourage bowlers to explore their strengths in both the spin and pace departments?

  1. Sobers was a one off He could bowl  all that stuff and batter the other bowlers with the bat as well Like I said A one off

  2. I think it takes a special sort of talent to be able to bowl different styles. Most players find it hard enough mastering one style, let alone two.

Better to be a master of one trade, than Jack of All Trades, and master of none.

  3. There was never a time when Sobers style all-rounders were in big numbers. Film Actress Nargin was only one but the item girls are dime a dozen.
