Why aren’t Venus and Serena Williams playing at Indian Wells in 2010?

Serena has been struggling with injury of late, and hasn’t played since the Australian Open, but even fit she most likely wouldn’t have been in the draw. They haven’t played the tournament since 2001, when Venus pulled out of her semi-final against Serena just before the sisters were due to take to the court. Venus cited injury as the reason she was unable to play. The crowd subsequently booed Serena that night and in the final and amid claims of racism, the Williams’ have not returned to the tournament since.
