  1. According to the Firefly Files, most species of the insect are found in warm, humid areas of the world. In the United States, flashing fireflies are usually found east of Kansas. Sightings in the western United States are extremely rare.

On the Fireflies in Houston site, readers send in reports of firefly sightings all over the U.S., not just Texas. According to the reports, fireflies have been spotted as far west as rural Utah and Montana, as well as in several areas in Colorado.
