Question:

Why arn't germ-line cells used for nuclear transfer in cloning?

I am doing a research assignment on cloning. Two facts I have read are that:

1. Germ-line cells are the only somatic cells that have not gone through differentiation.

2. that it is an obstacle in cloning that cells differentiate.

All examples of nuclear transfer cloning I have read about have used a nucleus taken from a non- germ line cell.

Wouldn't it make sense / be easier, to use a nucleus taken from a germ-line cell, as the cell has not differentiated?

Any shared knowledge would be appreciated.

  1. Germ cell lines are only haploid, that is they only have half the total number of chromosomes required for a fully functioning organism.
