  1. Barns are not always red and white.  I've actually never seen a barn, in person, that is another colour besides that of the wood out of which it was built, perhaps trimmed monochromatically.

    The practice of colouring barns white and red is apparently a largely American tradition of Northern states.  It's suggested that the colour red is used either because ferric oxide, used to create red paint, was particularly cheap and available for farmers in New England and surrounding states or that it has preservative properties that would help to protect the structure.
