Why be SO modest?

why do muslim ladies have to be, basically, completely covered? i am muslim, and i go to parties with over 50 muslim girls from ages youngest at 10 to mothers.

you can still be modest without covering youself completely, correct?

all of us muslim girls at the least wear a tank top and capris that are below the knees.

i think that is respectable and modest.

also if you are always being covered up what do you wear at the beach? i wear a once piece and put short shorts on over. some of my friends just wear an oversized tee over their 2 piece. others wear a tank top and shorts that are above the knee.

who are we to say what is *ok* modest, or what is *too* modest, or what is immodest?

noone better than Allah, The Creator Himself isn't it?

your description of modesty is very much like what a *non-muslim* wud consider modest or casual dress to be.  that is not the way Allah and His Messenger has taught, and its not part of Islaam.  It is only part of Your life-style.

i dont know what's your defination of tank top.. tank top does not cover your shoulders and arms (my understanding)

u do know there are bathing suits that cather to the muslim women that covers from head to toes (similiar to diving suit)

normally i will just jump inside the sea in my scarf,long pants and long sleeved t-shirt( dark coloured and nothing translucent)... got weird looks sometimes but its common.

its up to you really coz i'm not here to judge anyone neither should you.

No that is not modest.

Modest is that when you cover yourself completely. When you are safe completely and these modest females have respect.

It is compulsory for every female to cover her face, body and hairs.

Many Muslim women who wear the hijab believe that Allah wants us to be covered in front of unrelated (non-mahram) men.  Are the parties you're attending women-only?  If they are, there is no reason to be fully covered.  Coverage in front of other Muslim women is from the navel to the knees.

At the beach, I have a custom-made swimsuit that consists of loose lycra pants, a loose lycra knee-length tunic and a lycra al-amira hijab.  I find it to be very comfortable physically, and because I'm a bit shy, I also find it to be more comfortable mentally than I would find a standard swimsuit.

I believe that modesty is mainly what's in your heart, and that it's possible to cover completely and engage in immodest behavior, and to not cover and to still be a decent person.  Allah is the judge.  However, because I believe that the Qur'an and hadith direct Muslim women to dress a certain way, I will be obedient to that.

Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:"Modesty is part of Faith and Faith is in Paradise, but obscenity is a part of hardness of heart and hardness of heart is in Hellfire."

The Prophet also said: "Modesty does not come into anything without adorning it."

Well, that's your definition of modesty and other people will have other different of views ranging from one extreme to another and everything in between.

However, as Muslims, we should trust the point of view of Allah when it comes to the definition of modesty. You can look the in the Quran and Sahih Hadiths.

because it says so in the qur'an

“And tell the believing women to lower their gaze (from looking at forbidden things), and protect their private parts (from illegal sexual acts) and not to show off their adornment except only that which is apparent (like both eyes for necessity to see the way, or outer palms of hands or one eye or dress like veil, gloves, headcover, apron), and to draw their veils all over Juyoobihinna (i.e. their bodies, faces, necks and bosoms) and not to reveal their adornment except to their husbands, or their fathers, or their husband’s fathers, or their sons, or their husband’s sons, or their brothers or their brother’s sons, or their sister’s sons, or their (Muslim) women (i.e. their sisters in Islam), or the (female) slaves whom their right hands possess, or old male servants who lack vigour, or small children who have no sense of feminine s*x. And let them not stamp their feet so as to reveal what they hide of their adornment. And all of you beg Allaah to forgive you all, O believers, that you may be successful”

Allaah commands the believing women to guard their chastity, and the command to guard their chastity also a command to follow all the means of doing that. No rational person would doubt that one of the means of doing so is covering the face, because uncovering it causes people to look at it and enjoy its beauty, and thence to initiate contact. The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The eyes commit zina and their zina is by looking…” then he said, “… and the private part confirms that or denies it.” Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6612; Muslim, 2657.

Sister the word "muslim" itself implies total submission, and if u do not submit then you cannot call yourself a muslim.

Following what you "think" is right and whatever....

Islam isn't something u inherit from your parents only, and just become a muslim because your parents are or because u have a muslim name......

You must be so modest because the men of the Arabian Peninsula have always been rather savage in their sexual expression. Here in the West we have, over time, got our men on a short leash with regard to this matter so things are a bit different here.

Honestly what your describing does not sound modest to me.  When I look at arms, neck area, I definitely think 'cover up'.  But you get so used to feeling so good all covered up you can no longer understand why women would not have the same feeling as you.
