Each sport gets to set their own rules for age eligibility.

For example:

Gymnastics is 16.

Diving is 14.

Equestrian events is 18.

Soccer there is actually a Maximum age of 23.

A 14 year old can compete in gymnastics, but you have to Chinese.

because its not an olympic rule, its a sport by sport rule. in gymnastics it used to be 14 but in 1997 the FIG (federation of international gymnastics) had changed it to 16.

The FIG (Gymnastics governing body) decided that the minimum age would be changed to 16 as a 14y/o has more natural flexibility and agility than a 16y/o. This gives them an advantage over the older competitors. As there is less flexibility in diving than in gymnastics, there's no natural advantage for a 14y/o in diving. You'll find most divers are ex-gymnasts anyway - in any form of gymnastics whether it's artistic, trampoline or tumbling. Another reason why the divers are older, they've changed sports and had to learn the rules of a new one.

They have different age groups for different events.  They made it 16 for gymnasts because there is a lot of physical and mental strain on them and they dont want to s***w up little girls' minds.

I've tried to figure out why the required age for gymnasts was raised from 14 to 16 in 1997, but I really couldn't find any answer and/or reason why they did this. My guess would be that gymnastics would be the more riskier sport because a gymnast would more likely be injured in this sport than diving.

My friend, diving and gymnastic have different rules, which are regulated by the governing bodies of both sports. There is no set age requirement for the athletes at the Olympics, that's the reason why a 14 year old can compete in diving an a 16 year can compete in gymnastics.
