Why can't Canada build a city on the Northside of Lake Superior?

Eastern Canada: You have Halifax, Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa, Kingston, Toronto, Windsor, York.

Then there's this huge gap of no cities for like 1000 more miles till you finally reach Thunderbay and Winnipeg.

Why is that area so empty?

  1. If you would look at a map you would that there are cities on the north side of the lake.

  2. Because to the immediate north of Lake Superior, is Boreal Forest.  We try not to destroy it just for the purpose of... destroying it.

  3. What the h**l?? York?? York was the name of Toronto like 150 years ago; its now part of the city (North York/East York), but it's not a city in its own.... besides, there are no cities between Thunder Bay and Sault St. Marie because most of that area is desolete and pretty much all Canadian Shield. It'd be impossible to build on that land. Also, it's way the heck up in the middle of nowhere, and all of the commerce in Ontario is in Southern Ontario.

  4. I am from that part of Ontario. I can tell you, people there do not want a big city. The small community spirit is exactlly what they are looking for. And anyways, there is so much snow there, I don't think we could find many people who would want to populate a large city like that.

Another thing, jobs. They live off logging and mining. The weather isn't good for farming and there's too much distance between them and the major cities to have industrialisation (too much travel).

And.... a lot of the land is protected by the native canadians.

But if you want to visit the beauty of nature, I recommend taking a trip there. It's really worth it.

  5. I guess that if the economicss made sense (think: trade and economics) then it would have happened hundred of years ago. That is a little like saying, say, why doesn't the American govermnent to build a big city between Billings and Bismarck?
