Question:

Why can't I access my network's shared files when I can connect to internet through the network?

I don't know if that made much sense, but here's what's going on. My family has a Netgear WGR614v5 router, which is currently providing wireless internet to one computer with OS X, three computers with XP and two computers with Vista. The two Vista computers can connect to the internet just fine, and it says it's connected to the network with local and internet access. When I go to Start -> Network on either of the Vista computers, the folder FAMILYROOM, which is the shared files and is called that because it's stored on the family room computer, is not visible. I don't know if that helps and if anyone has a clue what's wrong, but is there something I have to change on the Vista computers, the family room desktop or both? Or will we just have to upgrade to a newer router?

  1. First of all make sure the Vista computers are set up to allow file and printer sharing, this would be in the Start-> Control Panel -> network setup.

Next check what firewall (if any) you have working.  If your using zonealarm you need to set your local network to a trusted zone.

Next check that all the computers use the same workgroup name. This can be found in the control panel under system.

If these don't work check to make sure you can ping the Vista computers.  Find the computers IP address be looking at the network icon, clicking status, and clicking the support tab. Write down the IP address, go to the XP computer and do Start->run->"cmd" and hit enter.  This breings up a command box.  In the command box type "Ping" followed by a space and the IP address of the vista computers.  Now hit enter. This will test if the computers are on the same network and can see each other.  If this fails then you have other problems and I would suggest asking your local techie for help.

  2. removes some security cheaks and then try again.

  3. upgrade a newer router and get some more connection like wireless
