Why can't I access sites if I am outside of the United States?

I can't access certain sites, such as certain news providers, or www.annualcreditreport.com. I am not within the US borders and it says that it can not send the information to people who are not in the US. Why is this?

Hi there! I know the problem, as I'm in the UK. There are certain things that are restricted to US residents only for a number of copyright, political and licensing reasons. Basically there are people that have issue with others seeing their content for free.
