Why can't I burn a VHS to DVD if it's taped off the TV ?

I taped a movie off my cable on one of the movie channels and tried to burn it to a DVD to keep for my family to watch it wouldn't let Me why ? I am using a Magnavox DVD/VHS combo recorder. I thought if you tape something off the TV I could burn it. If it shouldn't be taped then why could I taped in the first place ? Could someone help Me

  1. This is rare indeed, but there is a possibility that there was a "copy once" flag when you recorded it. It allows you to record it once, but does not allow you to make a copy of a copy.

    To tell the truth, unless it is personal content, it is not worth copying movies from VHS to DVD. the quality is usually pretty bad; just rent the DVD or buy a used DVD.
