Why can't I cancel my short term disability?

I tried to cancel my st disability at my job and they told me that i have to wait untill open enrollment to cancel! Why is this? That means I have to pay for something that I dont want for the next 5 months!

  1. Yes.  Unless you quit, you're stuck with the benefits you selected at the beginning of the enrollment period.  That's part of the "deal" when you get group insurance, that your employer contributes to.  

    If you want the freedom to cancel whenever you want, you'll have to buy a private policy.  Coverage will likey be more limited, and of course, cost you a lot more.


  2. If you are paying for you STDI with pre-tax dollars it is an IRS rule that changes can only be made during open enrollment.

    When you signed up for your benefits you should have signed something stating you understand that.

  3. I would bet that if you read the contract you signed,  you will see that changes can only be made at open enrollment.  That saves a lot of money and reduces rates.

    Read what you sign and understand it before signing.
