Question:

Why can't I delete text in Word

So whenever I'm in word typing and I highlight a certain text and hit backspace to delete it...it does nothing, it stays there. When I highlight the text and try just typing...it does nothing, and the text is still there. It will erase, however if I highlight the text and hit the delete key or I just have to keep pushing backspace like 100 times. I'm not sure why it's doing this. I was thinking maybe I hit something on my keyboard which is a wireless Microsoft one, or I hit something in Word for it to do this. This started happening a couples weeks ago. Its very frustrating when I'm typing thinking that something was deleted and it wasn't! Please Help!!!

  1. This is a Word option setting (Word XP (2002) and adjacent versions.  Word Vista (2007) probably has something similar):

    1. Click on the Tools->Options menu item.

    2. Click the Edit tab.

    3. Under Editing Options, check the check box next to "Typing replaces selection".

    4. Click OK.

    That should do it.
