Question:

Why can't I enter in my scratchfoot spin properly ?

my 2 foot spin is virtually flawless, but then I do a 3 turn backwards crossovers, and step forward or even from a T position and I cant even enter into my spin properly. I do my usual checklist, body straight head up I try to keep my left spinning leg rijid and try to complete the first stage of the SF which is spinning on my left leg with my right leg up to the side and my arms out, but I cant even do that let alone start to bring my leg in and my arms together,

i either fall sideways or end up bringing in my right and end up doing a beautiful 2 foot spin but its still not a SF :(

ive been working on this for almost 2 weeks ive seen minimal progress, sometimes i end up spinning on 1 foot but for a short amount of time and my right foot is barely off the ice.

What else can I do ????

  1. When you lift your leg make sure your weight is all on your spinning foot otherwise you will fall over to your right (if you are a counter clockwise spinner). Try going into a 2 foot spin first and then lifting your right leg up.

  2. It took me 4 months I think to finally get my leg around! It's just a really different feeling, isn't it? But it probably took me another 4 months to make it pretty, fast, centered, and balanced. :]

Just listen to your coach and maybe try to watch other skaters doing them. Good luck!

  4. When I first started out, I was in the same situation.  Some of my juniors are also having the same experience.  Now, if your two foot spin is virtually flawless, why don't you try going from a two foot spin to a scratch spin?  In mid-spin, simply lift your right leg off the ice and try to cross it so that you will be in a scratch spin position.  The problem might also be due to your arms (if one is positioned higher than the other, it might throw you off balance), lack of pressing your body weight onto your spinning foot's sweet spot, even nervousness or frustration.

Also, when you skate the backwards entry, check that your stepping into the spin is directed towards the middle of the circle you skated.  Use your left arm to guide you as you hook the spin and don't splash your arms about!

Without seeing you attempting the actual thing, I'm sorry I can't pinpoint directly what is wrong, but I hope the above helps somewhat.  It takes time to transit from two-foot to scratch, don't rush but take your time and be patient and diligent!

  5. to start a scratch spin you need to start on one foot. which means start spinning on one foot with your leg out and then bring yourself into the scratchspin. make sure you are taking your time going into the spin so you are not falling sideways.

get some tips from your coach too :D
