I have found the records of mom's 2nd and third marriage, as well as the divorce of second husband. Can't ask mom, she died 2yrs into the marriage of 3rd husband. And most of dad's side are gone as well.

  1. Cannot answer your question.. because I don't know WHERE you have looked!

I can think of three possible reasons.  One is that you have the correct spelling of both persons, but it is indexed wrong. Another reason could be that they fibbed to you all along, and the marriage was in Las Vegas. (Given that you are looking in Ventura, you surely know that speedy easy marriages = Las Vegas, or even possibly Tiajuana).  The Calif marriage index on Ancestry.com is dated only from 1960- 1985.

This is from the genweb site for Ventura county.. again, they don't have that period of time posted online. So, you can contact them directly.  Friendly warning.. some clerks are research friendly, and go out of their way to find a record. I also have had others, who think genealogy is a waste of time, tell me that a record "isn't there".. and I have later found it MYSELF by personally looking.  If it still isn't in Ventura, don't rule out that it MAY be in Los Angeles co, or another adjoining one.

Good luck!  Remember, that marriages always are a tad different, in that you know a person was born or died, but marriages sometimes didn't happen. Or people are human, and won't admit that it was really 3-4 months later than expected.

  2. The paperwork could have been taken out in a different county, and a Ventura County ceremony could have just been for show. You might check the Santa Barbara County Clerk Recorder's office or any other county where one of them might have lived prior to marriage.
