Question:

Why can't I get any loft with my woods?

I am just getting back into golf. I am hitting my irons pretty consistently with nice loft, but with a bit of a hook. But all my wood and driver are struggling to get in the air. Why?

  1. Sounds as though you are using the same ball position at address with the woods as you are with the irons. Could it be that you are placing the teed ball in the center of your stance ? This would indicate you are hitting the ball on the downswing. So play it just inside the lead  foot a couple of inches and see if this solves the problem. If not move it a bit further forward and you should be hitting the ball on the upswing which should give you lift.

  2. You are probably hitting down with your driver and woods. Hit downs work with irons where you try to trap the ball against the turf for a penetrating trajectory.

You certainly know that your driver and woods have less loft compared to your irons. If you hit down with any of them, you deloft the clubface. The result is that you hit the ball with an almost vertical clubface, thus the lack of height in your ball flight. You have to sweep with your driver and woods. The ball should be hit on the upswing.

Position your ball a little more towards your forward foot (left foot for righthanders) to promote a sweep. Stand with about 3/4 of your weight on your right foot. Tilt your your upper body to your right such that your left shoulder is higher than the right.  Adjust in small increments until you achieve optimum trajectory.

Try not to lift the club on the backswing. Keep the clubhead low to the ground during the first 12 inches of the backswing and stretch your arms as far back as you can.

Your downswing arc should bottom before the ball just gracing the turf.

  3. I get a fair amount of loft with my wood!

  4. you did not mention age .as we get older are swings speed change, using a little slower .sometimes you have to go to more loft and different shaft with a little more flex and kick

and of course a good teaching pro at a golf course or teaching pro at driving range .some pro shops, they can measure club speed

  5. try keeping you eyes on the back of the ball... i had the same thing happen to me... big ball mark right in front of teeing area... let your shoulder lift your head on the follow-through to see flight of ball... hope this helps, let me know!!!

    "HIT 'EM STRAIGHT"

  6. maybe your teeing it down to low. Try going to a lesson/clinic its the best way to improve because we (ppl on YA) cant see your swing and tell you

  7. You could be moving your whole body towards the target instead of letting you hips fire ahead of your upper body.

The best you can do is to book in a lesson with you local pro, then you can be certain that you are getting the right information.

    Good luck with your golf!
