Question:

Why can't I get into these websites now?

In my answers, I frequently refer to a group of completely public Australian government websites (all the same domain) for specific information on my particular field of expertise. For the last couple of hours, whenever I try to access any of them I get this message:

Access Denied (policy_denied)

Your system policy has denied access to the requested URL.

For assistance, contact your network support team.

No one on my tiny network (2 PCs) has changed anything in any way. I've been watching the Olympics and haven't even been at my computer! The sites are completely public and open in every way and I've never had any trouble getting on to them before. I haven't done the wrong thing or misused them in any way. My good quality and up to date security software hasn't detected any intrusions.

Does anyone have any ideas about why this would occur, and what I can do about it?

  1. Is it possible that they are having some kind of server problems? There are a few sites that I use frequently that gives similar messages when they have server issues. If you have any kind of contact information from the site (e-mail, phone, etc), maybe you could give that a try and see if they can tell you what's going on? Or, like the message says, try contacting someone in network support for you?

It's very possible that it may not be a problem on your end, but it wouldn't hurt to check into it if you can.

  2. maybe there servers down
