Why can't I go blonde?

I have naturally light ash brown hair. Over the course of my 18 years of life, i have dyed it various shades of darker brown. I recently decided I wanted to go a dark/medium ash blonde, which is actually not too much lighter than my natural color. So I went to the salon, and my stylist said it was "impossible" to dye my hair any lighter. Why? Can't she use a color stripper to get the dye out, then lighten it? I know many people who have dyed their hair dark, then gone back to blonde (without bleaching). Is my stylist right, that going lighter is impossible? If so, why?

I highly doubt it's impossible.  It might take a lot of chemical processing.  Maybe she doesn't want to do it because she doesn't want to take the chance of ruining your hair.

As a cosmetology student and a receptionist at a hair salon I know the fact that a color cannot lift color you need to do a double process in order to lift your hair to blonde. You will have to bleach your hair out first and then apply a blonde color to get the result you want.  Your stylist is afraid of doing this because you probably have a metallic color in your hair.  For your hair to lift you will have to go to a local beauty supply and  get a bleach with a 40 volume developer 40 being the strongest as well as two lightening packets mix it until it has the conistency of oatmeal  and apply it first to the ends and midlengths then to the roots last.   Clairol Basic white is a good bleach along with the 40 clairol pure white developer. To speed up the process put a plastic cap and use a hairdryer and do this for 30-45 minutes if the results are orangey which they probably will be because brown hair has a lot of orange in it Simply tone it with a light Ash Blonde the light Ash blonde will get rid of any residual brassiness.  The good color is the wella Color Charm Light Ash Blonde with the 20 developer after you have bleached your hair.  The results should be a champange/gold blonde color kind of like Reese Witherspoon. To keep your newly blonde hair fresh touch up the roots every two weeks using the 20 devleoper with the basic white  bleach and the light ash blonde after to even it out a bit. Be sure not to overprocess or touch previously bleached strands.  10 minutes should be sufficient for the roots to develop use heat.   Blondes go brassy rather quickly so what I recommend is to use the kms or the dumb blonde purple shampoo and conditioner which will keep the yellow out as well as a deep conditioner or cholestorol treatment which can be found at the beauty supply to keep your hair healthy. In no time you will go from brunette to blonde effortlessly. Happy Blonding.

I see no reason why you can't go blond unless your hair is really damaged. Get a second opinion  and maybe a third..ask a Male beautician also.

I really see no reason that you can't lighten your hair. Girls with brown/black hair go PLATINUM blonde all the time. I don't know what your hairdresser is talking about. Did you ask her why? I'd suggest doing some research. If she still refuses, find another hairdresser.

No she is WRONG.

I have really dark hair i mean REALLY dark hair, although i used to be blonde like paris hilton and it looked au natural.

My hair stylist went the lightest we could go with out looking too fake, then she gave me highlights and toner every time i went in instead of doing the same color. Each time i went, it got lighter and lighter. It looked really good. Maybe you should find someone else to do your hair.

It is real cost effective though be ready for the cost.

ooh i think i know why:

well this girl at my school had platinum blonde hair but she dyed it dark dark brown like almost black looking. and it started lookin a little green turning back to blonde but she dyed it dark brown again. then when she dyed it back to blonde it stripped a lot of her hair back and it was so damaged cus she had it dark for about 2 years. so maybe your stylist means like your hair will fall out if you dye it back blonde. just let the black fade as much as possible. then maybe you can dye it blonde.

ya i think so, you might have to bleach it or something because it might be to dark and you wouldn't be able to get that exact color

You probably could use a color stripper then dye it, but it would fade into an ugly greenish gray color when the dye comes back out, and it would be difficult to dye over it without fading quickly and messily. I've had the same difficulties with deciding on a color, because that's what my stylist told me.

Pretty much anything is possible.  What she may mean, though, is that she can't lighten it without frying it.  Get a second opinion and get it done!
