Question:

Why can't I log in to my Belkin cable router settings??

I recently bought a Belkin F5D7230uk4 and managed to set it up correctly with Virgin Broadband quite easily.

At first I didn't have a password to use the router wirelessly (on my Macbook) but since I have put a password in place I am unable to log in to the settings screen (192.168.2.1).

BTW, It asked me to set TWO passwords. One guest password and one administrator password.

I need to do be able to log in to set some firewall rules (for aMSN webcam/file sharing and Azureus).

I tried connecting to the network using the admin password but it wouldn't let me so I logged on as a "Guest".

Does anybody know why I can't log in from 192.168.2.1? It won't even load the page.

How do I fix this? Preferrably without having to reset and reinstall the router.

  1. Just to clarify, there are two passkeys (main and guest) which are used for wireless encryption when you select WPA or WPA2.  There is also the web-admin password which is used to get into 192.168.2.1

The Guest key only allows INTERNET access.  If you had friends over, you could give them the guest key and let them connect to the web without breaching security of your shared files and main network.

**NOTE: Entering a guest key is optional.  If you leave it blank, you can always change it later and it won't affect your other computers on the main network.

The main wireless key allows full access as if you were connected to a wire -- to the entire network (except guest computers).

**NOTE: This is the important (and required) one -- you need it to connect your computers wirelessly to the secured connection.

The admin password is something completely different, it's what you use to access 192.168.2.1 and change settings.  This has nothing to do with encryption, it's only to keep someone else from changing your settings (e.g. the firewall rules you want to put in)

    1. plug in with a WIRE.  This eliminates the need for confusing wireless passkeys or any other wireless issues keeping you out.

    2. turn off your wireless (or disconnect) so you don't get the "duplicate admin" page.  If you get that, unplug the router for 10 seconds so it'll reset your attempts.

    3. Open http://192.168.2.1 and click "log in" at the top right.

    4. either press Submit with no password or if you changed the admin password (not the encryption passkey but admin password) type that and press submit.

If you can't get in, you'll have to hard-reset the router and simply re-run the setup CD.  It's not that big of a deal, you just plug into your modem directly into your computer, like you did at the beginning, and insert the CD...it'll take care of re-configuring everything farily easily (especially since you have the previous experience and know what to expect).

If all else fails, I've found the Belkin support is usually quite helpfull...I've only had to call once because wireless went bad and they were very nice troubleshooting and once they found it was defective, replaced it free of charge.

  2. First of all, make sure you're typing in the correct password.  then, try connecting through another port on the router.  sometimes you can only connect through a certain port.  if you cannot connect through either of these methods then you may have to reset the router.  another problem it could be is that you disabled the http acces to the router. if that is true, you should be able to telnet into it but you would need to know telnet really well to change configurations.

whatever may get you in there, disable the guest access.  it is not a good idea to have guest access to the router even though it may be password protected.

  3. the ip may have changed so to make sure it is 192.168.2.1 go to system preferences then network then click on the connection your currently using which will have a green dot next to it.  next look at the ip address next to the word router and then type that number in your web browser.  If you still cant connect even then I would just restart it and next time make sure you back up the settings after you configure settings.
