Question:

Why can't I move my hips, then my shoulders in my golf down swing?

Ok, I know the downswing sequence - shift to left foot, hips,

shoulders, arms, hands and clubhead. I guess in the split second, it's hard to execute this. I am have tried simpler things like swing from the ground up. But, no luck. Also, my usual slice move has my shldrs and hips moving together at the top - result a slice. Any suggestions or drills?

  1. Try starting the downswing by just thinking turn the left hip to the left.  If you start with that the shoulders, arms, and hands have to follow.

  2. Googie posted a pretty good answer above.

In other words..  Think of the golf swing as a rotary motion.  Think of how a baseball player performs his swing.  Its a strong rotation of the shoulders, chest and upper body around his spine.

The only difference in a golf swing, is.. we do this same movement.. except over a bent over spine.

I'm converting over to a "One plane" swing and its easier than a classical "Two plane" or upright swing.  The one plane swing requires less timing. and isn't so dependent on the lower body (take note I didn't say it doesn't depend on the lower body.. its just not as much as the two plane swing.. you need fast hips and timing of the lower body on a two plane swing).  The one plane golf swing is a pure rotary motion, with a body release as you continue to rotate left, after impact.

If you get the backswing in the correct position, you have no choice but to come down in the downswing on plane, and from the inside.  All thats needed is to "squish the sponge" with the lead foot, and transition to the downswing and away you go..

  3. I agree with the above answers and the fact that you have to keep your swing on plane going back and bring the club back down the same plane when coming down. You have to make sure your hip and arms/hands are in unison too. If you start your hips too early, the hands drap and you push the ball. If you start the hips too late, the hands rotate over too early and you pull the ball. The hands/arms should start the downswing, and the hips should go through the stike zone at the same time as the hands. They have to be in sequence to hit the ball solid and straight. It is tough to do, but once you find the rythym, it is a great feeling.

  5. One cannot think of making the golf swing in distinct sections since all the pieces are interconnected. One follows the other whether it is from the ground up on the backswing or planting the foot on the downswing which will initiate the hip turn, the torso and shoulder turn etc. The answer to curing the slice is the swing plane which represents the circular movement of the arms and club to the top of the backswing and on the same line back through the striking area with the club extended to the target line. The force of the swing will carry the club over the lead shoulder, to a complete follow thru with your belly and belt buckle facing the target. Can't remember which issue of Golf Digest explained the swing plane but it is the secret for hitting the straight ball.
