My hamster is 4 months old and i feed him a treat everyday. When he eats i pet him and he enjoys it.Knowing he had my scent i tried to pick him up by grabing his shoulders. When i do this he runs to a different location. So, i tried something different. This time when he went in a tolit paper roll i picked it up about 1 foot of the ground and tilted the roll so he had to come out on my hand. He put two paws on my hand then tried to get back in the roll. I put the roll back on the ground and i pet him and he was fine. But when i tried to pick him up he freaked. PLEASE HELP!!!!

  1. dont pick up a hamster from behind then lift in the air because to them thats the sign that their being picked up by a bird of prey and are being whisked away to feed the three little bloodthirsty chicks. put a treat on your hand and wait for your hamster to climb on your hand. be gentle and patient. talk softly and sweetly to your hamster so it associates you with food and positive encouragement. also wash your hands before holding your hamster to wash away any unfamiliar smells.

  2. thats what my new rat does.all you have to do is do that until he can trust you.plz pick as best answr.http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?...

  3. Try this, put a coffee mug in the cage, and let him crawl inside.

Don't just grab him up by the shoulders, carefully scoop him up. Talk softly to him.

Don't force him to do it if he doesn't want to, this will only make him not like being picked up even more.

  4. did u get this hamster out of its cage straight away or after 2 days

it just sounds pretty scared to me whenn you first got it did u drop it or scare it of any sort you wil just have t be firm and get him use to you but the hamster on your knee while strokng him gettin use to the deiifernet feels of things some animals dont like the feel of humans

if you didnt get him out of the cage when he was younger straight away maybbe thats whats scared him - cause oyu didnt get him use to you staright away just keep trying

my hamster was very scared at first but i have another one too but i cant get her out because she is to old and small and bites me

  5. i just got a new mouse and it does that to. You

just have to work with him some more and he

will get used to you and won't do that anymore.

  6. your hammie just seems scared!!! did you just get him/her? what i did when i got my hammies was:

-with my first hammie, i just put my hand next to the cage door, had a treat in my other hand, and coaxed my hammie to my hand by letting my hamster almost get ahold of it, and then move it closer and closer to my hand until it was on my hand. if your hammie really wants the treat they will go on your hand! they might grab it and run back into the cage really quick, but if you do this everyday then they will eventually get used to it and eat it on your hand.

-if that doesnt work, just take the top off your hamster cage and corner your hamster, and then just scoop it up with TWO hands, for it is the most comfortable way to be picked up by hamsters.

good luck and hope i helped!!!

  7. Have you tried these two ways?

"How to Pick Up a Hamster

The best way to pick up a hamster is cupped in the palm of your hand with the other hand over its back to prevent it jumping off your hand (and possibly getting injured). Especially at first, it is best to hold your hamster just above your lap or some other soft surface in case it falls or jumps. Let the hamster crawl from hand to hand and it should gradually become more comfortable with handling.

Picking Up a Hamster That Isn't Tame

If you need to pick up an hamster that isn't yet tame place a can or cup on its side in front of the hamster, and gently herd the hamster into the cup , which can be used to carry the hamster. Out of curiosity many hamsters will walk right into the cup. If necessary, gloves can be worn to protect the hands if you must pick up a hamster that bites, but extra care must be taken not to be too rough or your hamster is just likely to be stressed by the experience and resist handling even more."

My hamster hates to be picked up & when I tried the scooping way he wasn't as bad, took about a week for him to get used to it, but now he doesn't jump right out my hands (:
