Question:

Why can't I ping an IP address from offsite even though we are on the same network?

I have some Hobart scales that get their pricing from a program I have in the main office. All my stores are on the same network and I can ping anything on the network regardless of where I am at. Last week, the scales stopped getting updates. I can still ping the scales from within the store but if I try to ping them from another store or the office I get now response. I can still ping all other scales at all other stores without problem. Any ideas?

  1. Either the firewall at that store has been changed so that that scale is no longer allowed to go beyond the store, or there is a problem with the scale. You should contact the Hobart tech support and have them check it out

  2. Occasionally the Cat5 cable I am assuming is used to connect can be damaged so as to break the recieve, or transmit line only, leaving it unable to do one or the other.

If your really lucky just changing a new cable MIGHT help.

Other than that has there been any changes to any firewalls, or router port forwarding etc.

    Good Luck.

  3. It could be you have a WAN issue or internet connectivity issue at the on location. That's assuming you did not change anything on your networks.

Try a trace route to see where the failure is from each end.

    Command is: tracert <ip>

Another possibility is your default gateway might be incorrect so if the device receives the packet but doesn't know where to send the reply.

Ring your provider with the info you get for further advise even as I suspect its a WAN issue. Good luck
