Why can't I play DVD's or CD Videos on my PC, I have the right codecs? ?

i recently reformatted my pc. i installed the correct graphics driver, XVID and DIVX so that I could watch movies on my DVD drive and home movies on my regular CDR drive. Everything worked, but after one video setting change to the Desktop/Properties/Settings I am unable to view movies now in Windows Media Player, Why?
