Why can't I use my phone extension simultaneously with my main phone line?

I installed an extension to my main phone line. However when the line is in use I cannot hear the conversation going on when I use the extension or the main phone. I want to know how to reinstall the line to be able to use the extension or main line as described previously.

did you register the hand extension phone on the main-base phone first???

Not sure I am understanding your question but I will give it a shot. If you are trying to ease-drop then I cant help you. If the problem lies with not hearing the person on the other end then I would guess that the 2 wires are switched inside the wall jack or inside the phone. Try switching them at the easiest location to access and see if that fixes it. If you have more than two wires you will have to experiment. Dont worry about getting zapped. The amperage is too low to hurt you.
