Why can't I use the computer and laptop at the same time?

I am currently using a HP laptop, brand new. Anyways, I have at@t elite internet, which in my opinion is faster then roadrunner. I have my extention port connected to the phone jack. There are two entrances to the extention port. One is for the phone line, and the other is for the modem. When I have my modem connected to the computer, I am able to use my laptop and the phone at the same time. But since I have my modem connected to my router for wireless internet, I can't use the phone and laptop at the same time. What gives? Can I do something about it??

your setup is screwed up.

Its not an extention, its a filter. your in need of someone who can come and physically setup your configuration for you. the one for the phone line is for the phone only.

you need to have the modem connected for the one labled internet and the wirless router then connected to the modem, which the modem will actually run through the wireless router. only then will you be able to use both at the same time.
