Why can't I use yahoo as my home page?

I have windows xp professional with all of the automatic windows updates.

You are doing something wrong.

Go into your internet options, set it on the homepage/general tab.

tools > internet options, type in yahoo.com in the homepage space, click okay

Are you using Internet Explorer?  If you go to Tools > Hope Page...and type in www.yahoo.com you should have Yahoo set as your hope page.

If it substitutes something else after you do that, it is probaly spyware that is diverting you.
