I keep taking my 4 year old girl out to try to catch a fish in the delaware river where it meets the rancocas creek in Riverside, NJ (near Philadelphia). Usually we don't have luck and then try at a lake but have no luck there too. What am I doing wrong? I've tried worms the first few times and then I tried these tiny shrimp things. With the worms I'd get fish eating it off the hook without getting caught on it. Could my hook be too big? Do I need to fish early in the morning? I'm using a floater and the line dangles about a foot down from the floater. Any suggestions? I'd love to catch a huge fish in the river but anything would do!

  1. fish never show when the sun is high so fish at morning and sunset. also you should double the length between the floater and hook. Remember, fishing is not about getting fish, it is about having fun, relaxing, learning patience and the sport. GOOD LUCK!!!

  2. only use a treble hook if you plan on keeping the fish. Most of the time they will do more harm than a standard hook. You're probably using too large a hook.Keep an eye on your bobber, when you see it start to move around you could try to set the hook (give the pole a quick yank upward to set the hook in the fish) or you can reel in a little bit and try to make them go after it and run with it which would make your bobber go under and then set the hook.

Try varying your depth off the bobber too.Sometimes that can make all the difference.

  3. Stick+String+worm+hook+patience= fish

  4. if you are trying to fish with your daughter, plan it all for her so she doesn't get bored.  she would like 7 sunnies compared to 1 bass.  just use a size 6 to 10 single (NOT treble) baitholder hook and a medium to small bobber (smaller is better). worms will work but so will corn, cheese, and lots of other stuff for sunnies

good luck (and if your daughter gets bored take a break and swim or play around)

  5. Use worms

    Use a treble hook

Make bait get very close to bottom

    You will catch fish

    Promise

Yes, some fish do bite best early in the morning.  Think of the kind of fish you want to go after, then study it's eating habits, in the early mornings or late in the evening, where & when it spawns.  A lot of fish bite best right after a good hard rain storm.  Catfish, for example, bite real good right after a hard rain & best from 5 pm until 7am.

For Catfish you need a medium size hook. experament with different sizes of hooks, use the one that works best for the kind of fish you're looking for.  I seldom ever use a sinker.
