Why can't a fifth of americans locate USA on a worldmap?

PS-yes,i heard this question in a "model competition".It was asked to a South Carolina's model.

simply because they are uneducated and by theh way, your english is great so dont worry

I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uhmmm, some people out there in our nation don't have maps and uh, I believe that our, I, education like such as uh, South Africa, and uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uhhh, our education over here in the US should help the US, uh, should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for us."

I've known many poorly educated people in the states, but I can't imagine any of them wouldn't be able to locate their own country on a world map.  They probably couldn't find other countries, though.

its because....well...the public school system here aint the greatest in the world.
