I make square shaped doughnuts every day at work.  We call lthem Dutchies.  They are square and have raisins in them.  They're especially good with a large double-double.

There really isn't  any reason they can't be square other than all the cutters I have seen are round.  If you want to make them square, just use a square cutter then something round to make the hole.

Wendy's makes square hamburgers, so why not square donuts.  I think all  donut companies should make square donuts.  It would be fun.  You can still put your finger in the little square hole.  Great question.

well they have long john donuts! but there rectangular haha. but i have no idea. doesn't matter to me cuz it just goes in your mouth anywayy

there is a bakery down the road that make nothing but square donuts...too bad you don't live around here!
