Why can't energy saving light bulbs dim, when used on a dimmer switch?

We have recently installed some new light fixtures and did not realize that energy saving light bulbs won't dim, they will only work on maximum power, when the dimmer switch is turned down, they just flicker.

Also does anyone know if you can buy energy saving light bulbs that will work on a dimmer switch?

  1. Dimmable CFL bulbs are available now. More expensive though. I think I even saw them at Walmart.

  2. all energy saving lamps, or CFLs are actually compact fluorescent lamps.  they do not work on a dimmer and require the voltage specified, usage of a dimmer will seriously damage the lamp & cause it to fail.  for usage with a dimmer, only conventional bulbs or halogen ones will work, but if you ask around, dimmable CFL can be found but they're costlier than standard ones as they are fitted with an electronic ballast.

  3. Because they are flourescent bulbs - which require a certain voltage level to react - then it's all or nothing.
