Why can't hockey goalies be a team captain?

And have there been any exceptions to the rule? I'd imagine it's because a captain has to be able to quickly confer with officials anywhere on the ice, difficult for a goalie.

  1. basically this is to speed up the game. the goalie skating all over the ice to talk to the ref would slow it down.

plus a lot of goalies have rituals which would be messed up if they were the "C"

  2. SubZero obviously has never donned the pads like DCFURY, myself and inevitably a few other people in this section.

  3. Pretty tough to argue a call with the refs when they're down at the other end of the ice.

  4. For starters, the rules prohibit the goalie from crossing his blue line other than to go to the bench during the second period.  In addition, the rules expressly forbid goaltenders from being either captains or alternates.

There have been no exceptions to this rule.

With all this being said, many teams rely on leadership and example-setting from their goaltenders in the locker room an similar; just because a goaltender doesn't have a letter fastooned to his/her sweater does not represent their leadership qualities.

  5. goalies cant cross the red line

  6. Correct the refs circle, that 1/2 circle at center ice is where the C's meet with the refs. & if a goalie crosses the red line he gets a penelty.
