  1. I suggest that you expand your horizons by not assuming that happiness can be gleaned from passively watching television.

Instead, diverse yourself by perusing the infinite variety of the Internet, immersing yourself in a hobby...

Television is but one choice which can be chosen from an infinite list.

  2. I have always thought that daytime TV was an atrocity, at best, ANY time of the year!

However, it must be REALLY bad right now because the writers' strike has brought almost all new programming to a screeching halt.  It's over now and they're back to work, but it will still be several more months before we see the results of their return.

"robertmi..." definitely has the right idea.  There is a vast world of other possibilities - even for a disabled shut-in.  In addition to internet browsing and chatting in chatrooms, there are games and puzzles like crosswords, cryptograms, logic puzzles, etc.

Of course, there is no substitute for a good book.  Books of every kind on any subject can be found as cheaply as a single penny (plus $3.99 shipping) on Amazon.com.  (I just ordered two very interesting-looking books from there yesterday - one priced at a penny and the other at 54 cents.)

Also, you could join a video/DVD rental club that mails you videos/DVDs - like "NETFLIX".  You could keep a steady stream of movies coming your way.

Given the quality of its offerings even at the best of times, too much TV is bound to be harmful and unhealthy to just about any mind.  I almost can't help but think that if this writers' strike has pushed some people to look elsewhere for entertainment and leisuretime activity, then it may well be the proverbial blessing in disguise!

  3. Why this time of year in particular. I was ssurprised when I retired  to see just how abismal daytime television was. it's so bad I almost ( only almost) wanted my old job back even thouugh it was killing me
