I remember when the first iPod was released, it was like we invented firewire so you're gonna have to use it. But now it's not an option. Firewire can only be used for charging?

  1. Firewire was removed from the ipod in the 3rd Generation versions simply because USB2 was as fast and more easily available as 99% of Windows machines do NOT have Firewire  support.

the unit can still charge form the firewire /Dock connector but not sync as it no longer has firewire in it.

the latest iPod 3G and next gen ipods also will also no longer support the firewire at all not even for charging.

The reason its dropped is firewire is very expensive and very few machines have it (OK 99% of Macs do but iPod is a universal device now not just a mac only one as in 2001)
