Question:

Why can't my cat meow?

I have a cat that is around 7 months to a year old and he can't meow. He does a little squeak when you are going to feed him. It sounds like he is trying but not succeeding. Does anyone know why? Does he have a breathing disorder or cancer? Please don't tell me cancer.

  1. It's fine. One of my cats used to be like that, and one day he just howled out this VERY loud mew. Ever since then he shut up. heheh. But some cats naturally don't mew much. One of my others is like that, never has said much, doesn't now, and probably never will.

    Good luck

  2. I dont think its cancer.its just the certain breed.some breeds of cats communicate more than other breeds.try pull on its tail for a try and see what happens.

  3. Oh I just have to answer!  My older Siamese squeaked so quiet, but when we bought another Siamese cat, a chocolate pte Oriental, she taught her and  the other of our 2 tabbies to "Speak Loudly".  She really taught how to talk!  Use your diaphragm!!!  I would be in the kitchen and Ginger, the oldest, yelled so loud at me and let me know if was feeding time!  Oh, I could write a cat book!

  4. Every cat has a different "voice."  My cat cannot meow either; he squeals instead ("eeee").  I am sure he is fine.  Next time you take him to the vet, just run it by him/her.

  5. Awwww, cute.

Don't worry about it. I've had at least three cats that did that all their lives.

I have a little black cat named Otto. When he was a kitten, when he wanted to go outside he'd stare up at me with these huge golden eyes and give this little plaintive squeak, even though he looked like he was going for a full-fledged meow. Some cats just do that, it's nothing to be concerned over.

I'm sure you're taking him to the vet for visits (or at least will take him to get him neutered), and the vet will catch it if there's anything wrong. If it looks like he's in pain, ask the vet about it directly. Like I said, though, don't worry about it. Unless he looks like meowing hurts him, he's just one of those cats that squeaks instead of meowing. I think it's adorable. :-P

  6. Don't worry, he might just have a sore throat or something.  My 7 month old kitten usually makes a squeaking noise in the morning and at random times during the day.  Your cats perfectly alright but if you want to get a check up done with the vet they would check the cats throat.  I definetely dont think he has cancer.  Good luck!
