Why can't my guinea pig move her front leg?

I am about to cry... It makes me feel so bad. She trys to walk and her right front foot just drags on the ground and she can barely walk. she drags her face on the ground trying to get to her destination. There has been nobody that has picked her up no kids or anything. I left and came home and she was like this. No offense but its like she is mentally disabled. I can't find a reasonable explanation for this. She is not even a year old yet. She just acts limp. I am hurting seeing her like this. Can somebody tell me what could be wrong? I have no income at the moment and can't take her to the vet. She can't even reach the food out of her bowl because she can't lift herself up, and i have to help her. I'm scared she is going to starve if i cant help her. Please help me?

  1. Take her to a vet.

There's nothing else you can do.

Call your local ASPCA or other animal chariety and they may give you cheap/free medical care. MAY. Or offer a payment plan.

She won't show pain because guinea pigs HIDE pain- if they showed weakness in the wild, they'd get killed, so it's instinct to hide it. Besides, she clearly IS in pain!

  2. As a long time owner of guinea pigs i highly sugest taking her to the vet. I had a guinea pig once that was very hurt she couldnt move at all! she died within a day. Please do the right thing and take her to the vet.

  3. She probably could have injured her leg somewhere. Take her to the vet immediately IF YOU WANT HER TO LIVE!

I used to have 2 guinea pigs, and one of them, which is very fat, accidentally dropped down from a table. My sister was cutting his nails but he doesn't like it so he squirmed and he fell. But he was so fat that the layers of fat protected him and when he fell he didn't hurt himself he just continued running across the floor XD

  4. no one here can say exactly why. the vet is so awesome for figuring out what is wrong. if she is having so much trouble you don't have a choice. if you were in her situation you would seek help. but she can't she depends on you for medical care. you will have to ask the vet how to modify her food and water supply.....so she feed correctly.

  5. if shes tilting her head she could be blind in that eye. there could also be something wrong with her spine. is there any way she could have fallen or something to hurt her spine?

  6. She is either sick or had a stroke. Just watch her for a couple of days and see if she gets better. If she still isn't able to eat her food take her to the vet.

  7. She could have injured her leg in many different ways, but it really doesn't matter how she hurt it.  The important things is that she is injured, in pain, and unable to function properly.  Guinea pigs hide pain well, so by not using her leg she is clearly indicating that it is very painful/damaged.

You need to find the money to take her to the vet.  Borrow from a friend, sell or pawn something.  Do whatever it takes, you owe it to her.

In the meantime you'll want to restrict her movement as much as possible.  Keep her still so she doesn't injure herself any further.  If she's having difficulty eating you will have to help her, she will quickly die without food.  You can try offering a lower bowl and hay rack.  Put the veggies directly on the ground so she can reach them.  It is likely she will still have a lot of difficulty eating so you will likely have to hand feed her.

To hand feed you can buy a product through your vet called Oxbow Critical Care.  For now you can make a pellet mush and offer it to her.  Grind down plain pellets and add water until it's the right consistency.  Try offering it to her on a spoon.  Great directions here:

    Good luck at the vet.
