Why can't open the Door of my x5 from the inside- Help

I have a 2001BMW x5 and usually, when pulled, the lever unlocks and then opens the door. Yesterday, I pulled the lever to get out and it did nothing. I can open it from outside the car but not the inside. What's the problem, can I fix it at home and is it going to cost me a fortune?

  1. You need to take the door card off and see if the cable from the inner door handle has come out or broken. You may need to get someone to look at it for you but i dont think it will cost a lot.

  2. child lock on?

  3. I had a 1997 BMW 740i that did the same exact thing.  It's a little cable inside the door panel that became disconnected with the interior handle.  You can probably find the part on www.bavauto.com (a reputable BMW parts site) and then take it to a local mechanic to have them change it.  Don't take it to a BMW dealer for something this simple because they'll charge you way too much.  This shouldn't be expensive to fix at all, no more than $100 dollars I would think.

  4. there should be a wire, cord, or some thing connecting the inside handle to the latch. Some times they stretch or come loose. if this happened the interior door panel would have to be taken off and the cord reattached or replaced. it could also be that the hole the cord hooks into has been bent or elongated. then that would have to be bent back or replaced. I would take it to someone who knows what they are doing if you are not mechanically inclined.
