Question:

Why can't people realise we make mistakes too?

Why can't people-supporters, managers and players alike accept that we referees are only human and WILL make mistakes like they do! A manager sometimes makes wrong calls, brings on or starts the wrong player and ends up losing a game, a player may make a mistake and give away a penalty or score and own goal! These are accepted as part and parcel of the game! So why is it we are not allowed make mistakes! I'll give you an advance warning we are going to make mistakes next season....it is only natural....but we hope to keep those mistakes to an absolute minimum!

  1. steve bennett is a favourite ref for ferguson.

  2. how much are you on a week at old trafford?

after that fiasco sending Masherano off i think your a complete re-tart and hope you get sacked.(the real Steve Bennett)

  3. You are right!Every person has his positives and his negatives! No one can be right at everything!Even god wasn't!I don't mind the decisions of a referee cause hi orders and this is his job!It is liked or no this is what he says!So we must understand them more as we do with the managers that bring a win or trophy!

Let me ask you!You are a referee? In witch league???I don't know your name cause i am from Greece.

  4. Hi Steve

Football's a funny game, and I remember at Uni I read a book about the psychology of the game, and they discussed things like violence etc.

A key feature of football, as opposed to say, rugby or basketball, is that there are very few 'scores' - sometimes none - which makes it nearly unique.  Therefore a split second can determine the game - which increases the tension hugely.

So, if a ref makes a total howler, then people might go mad because it could change the game.

Plus of course, there's so much (too much?) technology now, which allows everyone's performance - players, ref, manager - to be analysed to death.

Having said that, don't forget we footie fans also occasionally will admit that some refs are excellent, and are genuinely held in high esteem by the fans - we don't chant your name but we are genuinely pleased when we get a 'good' ref.

And from time to time, you'll make a great decision in 'our' favour.  Or a totally horrendous one (I've seen some baffling penalty awards in my time...)

Let's be honest, we react to everything, not just you.  Just keep your head down, do your best, and don't try to be the star of the show (unless it's a really BAD game!)

You're a key part of the game - you helpe make it the wondrous experience that it is - Keep on whistling!

    Best wishes,

    SS (Bristol City fan)

  5. Of course you may mistakes and some players are very good at conning you- and this is why retrospective decisions should be made in the light of video evidence.

I admit that some decisions cannot be reversed but i do not see why red/yellow cards cannot be awarded/rescinded by a panel after the match.

  6. i agree with you because i was playing in a match once and i tripped over my own feet!!!! the ref said i dived and i got a yellow card it made me so angry.

  7. Its unfair I know, cause you carn't always see everything when your suppose to see it, but I think they expect you to be right all the time cause your trained to be right when it comes to football.

  8. yes, refs make mistakes, like everyone else, but why shouldnt you take assistance from video refereeing? Once in a while admit when you are wrong? Be re-trained at ref school if found to have made a wrong decision which has cost a team a match?

Youve red carded me already remember!! ;-)

  9. Managers, players and fans are all desperate for their club to win.  During 90 minutes everyone's emotions are running high, so if the ref gives a bad decision people are gonna let him know about it.

I'm guessing most people have never refereed a match, so they don't appreciate just how hard a job it is.  I reffed a game once.  Never again!

Having said all that, there are good refs and not so good refs, and some refs who bottle decisions at certain grounds.

  10. I couldn't agree more with you Steve that you ref's have a very hard job but also sometimes ref's are not standing in the right angle to observe a foul/penalty or whatever, or even the fourth couldnt give 100% accurate info, would it be a better idea to have a camera TV angle like we watch on the replays straight after the fouls if a ref is not certain, i know it would consume a btit more time but at the end of the day, supporters cannot say anything about any game jsaut unlucky or the ref was against us.
