I think most people can't see those things within themselves because they don't realize what they really are. Each person, by design actually, is created with this desire for what they want, happiness. And at times we will do whatever it takes to get it. It is not that the desire is wrong, but that it takes on the degree of such magnitude that makes one feel as though they simply can not find anything in order to bring them satisfaction. So they up their efforts in their search.

It's like this. You start with basic needs, food , clothing, housing, etc. But then you want more. Education, knowledge, success. Along the way we pick up these desires and with them the drive to meet these needs for satisfaction and we carry them out no matter the cost. It sounds harsh but without this within us, this desire for happiness and such, we would actually cease to exist.

There is a way that we can come to an understanding of our true nature and why we were made this way. It was not to bring us all the destruction we experience, it is in order for us to fulfill the reason for our existence. meh. Religion may not ALWAYS be what causes it, but it sure gives an extra excuse. (but u cant tell me that the westboro baptist church doesnt breed and create hate and intolerance for non-believers...)
