Why can't public pools be open to the public after 5pm?

Many people know the dangers of sunburn and skin cancer that's associated with it, yet public pools aren't open around sunset?! I'm Irish and I burn within 20 minutes. The local pool is only open to the public from 1pm - 5pm. I wouldn't want to start swimming UNTIL 5pm. Now, I know there are more Irish people out there than just me. Someone's gotta do something about this. I would love to spend evenings swimming. I think this would also help overweight people that sunburn easy to have incentive to go out and swim and burn off some calories.

  1. You will need to pay for security and a life gaurd and that's too expensive.

  2. Our public pools close at 7pm, and after that it is available for rent for private parties.  Here in Missouri it usually isn't hot enough after 7 to want to swim.  Also by being open from noon until 7 or noon until 5 makes it where one person can work the whole shift for each station.

  3. They are where I live.

  4. Have you tried talking to the people who own the public pool?  Perhaps you could find some other people who think as you do and go talk to them as a group.

Keep in mind, though, there might be a reason for why they aren't open in the evening, such as funding.  Though I do understand where you're coming from.  I am fair-skinned, and I burn quite easily as well.

  5. Our city pool does stay open until 10 p.m. If your city operates the pool, ok then, contact your city council members and request late hours.  Get involved in the process of bringing this to be.  Good luck.

  6. They're open past 5 in Cleveland.  They do close before it gets dark, though.
