I am a starting pitcher for my team and I've had about 16 HR's so far this season. But when I watch the Major Leagues, I see that in the National League games, the pitchers just plain suck. I don't see why, looking at the fact that they have good eyes and arms.

  1. Well, Duh?

Why can't some so-called hitters hit the ball well?

Haven't you ever heard of the Mendoza line?

The Mendoza line is a major league batting average of .215

Get yourself a good stat book and start with players whose names begin with the letter A.

Before you can get halfway through the "A" listed players, there are 10 who didn't hit at  the Mendoza line.

But many had major league careers of more than two or three years.

  2. pitchers that have been in the league a long time havent had to hit very often (or at all in the AL) since college. Also, they dont focus on hitting, they focus on pitching. If they dont practice hitting all the time they will not do it very well. Same as with a hitter.

Also, some teams actually perfer that a pitcher has a short at bat so that they can get ready to go back to pitching, and to make sure that they dont hurt themselves swinging a bat or running bases (yeah, lame i know)

  3. They focus all of their time on pitching and don't concentrate on hitting.

  4. Its the stupid designated hitter rule.  The National League is the only place they play real baseball.  Before the desgnated hitter there were a few good hitting pitchers.  Usually the pitcher who were very good athletes.  But the fact that they play just every fifth day they do not get enough at bats to stay sharp.  With the stupid DH the pitcher just concentrate on pitching.  If I had my way the DH would be banned from all baseball.  It is not good for the game.

  5. The reason they can't hit is the reason they concentrated on pitching at a young age.

I have a son who was a slow runner, developed into a solid pitcher because he knew he couldn't make it as an every day player. He could hit, just had no speed.

  6. pitchers in the majors rarely work on hitting. they take all of their time working on their pitching so they can master it.
