At his prime during the mid-90's (95, 96, 97, 98) Shawn Michaels had 2 match of the year awards, the first one in 1995 (Wrestlemania 10 against Scott Hall) and the second in 1996 (Wrestlemania 12 against Brett Hart).
Then later we all know the rivalry between Shawn Michaels with Vince against Brett Hart which pretty much took 1997 down the road to HBK/Vince against Brett Hart. In 1998 HBK suffered a back injury in the 1998 Royal Rumble match against The Undertaker which took him out of action for almost 4 years from 1998-2002 where he came back and faced HHH at SummerSlam in 2002.
When HBK came back he was still very popular with WWE fans and had some amazing matches such as match of the year performances; Wrestlemania 20 (against Chris Beniot, HHH), Wrestlemania 21 (against Kurt Angle) and in Wrestlemania 22 (against Vince). And in a Raw special he had another match of the year against John Cena.
But he had only one chance to have the World Heavy Weight championship which was in the 2003 elimination chamber then later lost it to HHH in 3 stages of h**l. At that time HBK might have done and achieved everything in the business and he might want to spend more time with his family which is why he lost a couple of championship matches.
Well anyway my point was in the mid-90's HBK was the most popular WWF/WWE superstar and then suffered a back injury which cost him 4 years. Fans still cheer and want HBK to win, but doesn't the WWE let Shawn Michaels be the man again? They let The Undertaker and HHH.
