  1. The root of conflict between individuals and nations, Thich Nhat Hanh says, "is wrongful perception." And the only way to bring peace to the world is to cultivate internal peace by practicing "mindfulness," a calm, focused attention on the present moment that comes with a daily practice of meditation--a state that people from all beliefs can embrace with less practice than might be expected.

His message is simple, but essential to hear: "Pay attention to the world in which you live," he says. "The seeds for happiness are everywhere--in the blue sky, in the clouds, in the faces of our children." He advises us to simply slow down. "Take the time to live more deeply. You will make fewer mistakes and not cause suffering to self and others."

"If America acts compassionately within its own boundaries, it can take this process to other countries, to end terrorism and conflicts, to clear up the misperceptions that exist between us and them," says Thich Nhat Hanh. "It's important for us to know how we are perceived, why there is so much anger and hatred for this country. We need to look at the roots of suffering, that which is inside. As long as fear and despair prevail, they prevent us from enjoying happiness," he continues. "We need to let compassion guide our actions--personally and globally.

    "The whole world will benefit."

  2. Peace is impossible to achieve because humans are after all, well...only human.  All of us at one point act destructively.  Some, more than others.  Money and power play a big role in the reason why we don't have peace too.  Everyone wants to be on top and sometimes in order to get there, you have to push others down.  Arguments, war, and other things like that are part of human nature.  It's life.

By the way, Bush may not be a hippie on the corner asking people to honk for peace, but he is not the only individual who takes part in the world's inability to have peace.  Even before Bush, there was war, racism, and hate.

  3. The WORLD can't have PEACE because it has no power to do anything at all! It's the HUMAN beings, who are supposed to bring peace to the world. When a dog's barking breaks the peace at mid-night, it's not the dog but his master's duty to calm down his dog.

  4. Because

    1. War is a meaningless competition for those who want to prove themselves the strongest (Human ego and national pride prevents peace).

    2. Some human are power hunger and like to dominate over what they dislike (power trip prevents peace, too).

3 People like to be accepted and right, thus they want to convert or annihilate whoever disagree (religions, race, and social status prevents peace).

    4. Human are just like another territorial species who compete for resources (natural resources, and economical achievements prevent peace).

    5. Since human invented weapon, we've lost natural predators to control our populations (until we get condoms). War along with Natural Disasters are the only two that can control human from overgrowing like rats.

  5. peace is a state of mind. In order to be peaceful one needs to first understand himself or herself. For that people dont have time in this world and so there is no peace.

  6. ask bush

  7. Because it is filled with power hungry SO B's that want more and more power over one another...

  8. The question should be does the world really want peace? Think of how the global economy feeds on, and fans, conflict. So when we really WANT peace... we shall have it. Just hope it's not the peace of the graveyard after humanity self-destructs in the name of religion, patriotism, or some such...

  9. human nature

  10. Because Bush is alive.

  11. Peace is contentment. BUT TELL ME WHO IS NOT IN COMPETITION WITH EACH OTHER EVEN THE DEAD MUST BE HAVE THE BEST FUNERAL.

  12. 'cause peace is only an option.

  13. Because the human race is retarded.

  14. Because men greed for power and conquest.

  15. Because there's too many people in the world who consider their core beliefs (which conflict with other people's core beliefs) to be non-negotiable.

Witness the israelis and the palestinians both claiming the same land and neither willing to budge an inch as an example.

Edit: Okay, I'm no fan of big W, but blaming him as the cause of all the world's conflicts is a bit much.  I mean really, you guys think he's responsible for Sudan/Darfur, or Russia/Georgia, or Israel/Palestine?

  16. most of people including me feel that our believes are correct, we do not care what others think or whether our believes are just, practical and good for mankind. And also we think that if we listen to others and compromise or take back our words then either we lose something or we will be considered as weak. This leads to conflicts and we do not have peace.
