Why can't they cook a meal in the state of Connecticut?

I have never had a good meal at independent places. Just awful. Applebee's is better than any place I've been to, and that includes a dozen places in Greenwich. Has anyone else noticed this?

  1. I used to go to The Showboat when it was there in Greenwich years ago that was good,  If you ever want a great cup of chili or chili dogs ther'e a place called Pats Hubba Bubba on Main St. just over the Greenwich border in Port Chester NY.  Its just a tiny littlecounter and stool type place but good mom and pop place to go to when you're just driving around.

  2. I've eaten in many great places in the state of CT.    I grew up in Westchester;  if you're in Greenwich and its that bad just shoot over and eat with us.

All the great places I ate in were up in the Old Saybrook, Essex, Westbrook area (south of Mystic and the casinos).  Most of them were seafood and they were all great.

  3. Thanks A LOT Benny...My son is going to the Connecticut Culinary Institute in July in Hartford.  Is this telling me something???

  4. Where are you from? Greenwich? I'm from Greenwich and seriously, if you just walk along Greenwich Ave there are a number of places you could get a decent meal at: chinese, mediterranean, italian, thai, japanese and a lot more! You don't even have to go very far from the Avenue and you can spot Tengda, good asian bistro and Glory Days, diner (Putnam Ave)!

I could go on and on but I'm not sure what exactly you're looking for. Why not search online for your choice cuisines. I have attached a link for a list, anyhow:

  5. Dunno, I've had lots of good food in CT.  Stay away from the cities, though; anything that isn't overpriced is made by, um, unskilled workers.  (Notable exceptions in the New Haven area are Mammoun's and Pancho Villa.)  Anything called 'Athena Diner' (we have 4 of them statewide) is a place to avoid.  Same goes for the Goldroc (aka the 'Goldbrick') in West Hartford.  If you're in East Hartford, though, try the AAA Diner on Route 44.  Near Norwich, Asylum Street Pizza is excellent; as are Cheshire Pizza and Mr. B's in Cheshire.

Bottom line: Ask the locals, and look around.  There are good and bad places everywhere.

  6. It depends on where you live.  I have had good meals in New Haven, West Hartford, Middletown , Woodbury, New Hartford and New Milford.  Where I live there is not much that is impressive, so I have to travel out of town.

  7. Perhaps you are not eating at the right places.  We have some definite favorites and are never disappointed, but not in Greenwich.
