Why can't trees grow above a timberline?

  1. It is usually much to cold and the soil condition are not adequate to support the root system.


  2. I believe it is because it gets too cold during too much of the year for the trees to live that high up on a mountain.

  4. the timberline is created because there is something lacking above that point that the trees need to survive.  This can be that it is solid rock, no soil.  It might be that it is too cold for the trees to survive, the growing season may be too short.
