Question:

Why can't vegans eat bread?

Sorry for my ignorance, but I've just been reading some other questions and some people have stated that vegans can't eat bread. Why not? When I make bread I just use flour, yeast, a very small amount of either sunflower or olive oil, a pinch of sugar and a pinch of salt as well as water. I realise that some processed breads may contain butter or milk and can understand why vegans wouldn't eat them, but most bread doesn't.

  1. Vegans can and do eat bread as long as the bread does not contain eggs or dairy products.

  2. A lot of processed breads contain egg/dairy ingredients, if white sugar is used, that isn't vegan.  They do sell breads that are okay, but you have to be really careful. I do make my own a lot.

  3. They can eat breads as long as there is no animal products in it (milk, eggs, honey)

Also, a bit less obvious are certain E numbers and additives which can be animal derived too.

  4. If you use eggs, butter, shortening they cannot eat. Sounds like your recipe is fine though.

  5. it's usually just white bread that contains milk.

  6. I'm vegan, and I eat bread.

I just won't eat breads that contain eggs or dairy.

  7. Vegans can eat bread..just the kind made without animal products.  I'm not vegan but I happen to buy a bread that is.  A lot of commercial bread has egg or dairy in it.

  8. What is Yeast ?  A living animal . They may eat bread that dosnt use Yeast or Animal products. Such as flat bread and so on

  9. You're recipe is fine for vegans! They usually make their own bread or buy special veganized bread, they do no but supermarket bread which has been processed, these use butter and fats etc. Hope this answers you question!

  10. As long as a bread has no butter, milk, eggs, or honey, vegans can eat it.  If you're using sugar, look for turbinado (raw) sugar or evaporated cane juice crystals to ensure the sugar was not processed through bone char.

  11. Idk.  I eat bread as long as I check the ingredients and there aren't any animal products.

  12. They are all right, it is just hard to know if it doesnt contain any animal products. You know some extreme forms may veiw yeast as an animal though... in which case they could still eat non levened breads. (flat breads)

  13. I have never heard of vegans not eating bread.  I would say if the bread is marked as not having any animal product, most vegans would eat it.

  14. Vegans can and do eat bread, and most breads are suitable for vegans.

It's only those that contain ingredients like eggs, milk or honey that vegans avoid.
