Also, other then trying to make power travel wireless, there now is a thing where you place your phone or something on it it automatically charges without wires automatically? Why don't we use this?

  1. Elitists won't allow it.Had the technology one hundred years ago.[see works of Tesla].

  2. There are some emerging wireless power transmission systems that can handle higher power levels, but generally speaking, the reason that power isn't wireless is because of the energy levels usually associated with 'Power' usually don't travel distance well..  In a way, even something as small as a radio signal is power, if you think about it, just a really small amount of it.

Your electric toothbrush has a very low power 'wireless' system - in the base there is a small motor spinning a very small magnet; at the bottom of your toothbrush is a small coil that when placed up against the spinning magnet acts like a generator - recharging the battery in your toothbrush.  This is called inductive coupling, and is one of the simplest ways to wirelessly transmit low level power.

And think about other low power alternatives - if you had a light running on a battery that you shine through a lens to a solar cell on the other side of the room, and connected a radio to that solar cell - you have wireless power.  This is being done to transmit moderate levels of power to places that transmission lines can't reach.
