Question:

Why can't wisdom teeth be manipulated with braces?

I just found out that I have a severely impacted wisdom tooth, and that it's going to have to come out. The dentist said it looks like I might very well have to have the one next to it removed too, because they're too close together to get the job done.

Can't they just attach braces to those teeth, in order to move them apart? If not, then why?

  1. Wisdom teeth are of no value in most cases, so they're removed.

  2. Because braces only straighten the teeth, not the root, and that is where the wisdom teeth are impacted, at the root.  Also, if not pulled, impacted wisdom teeth will result in abscesses which are very painful.

I have included a site which will explain more to you about impacted wisdom teeth.
