Why can't you drink on antibiotics?

I'm going to a dinner party and I'd rather people didn't know I was on them. Everyone else will be drinking as these things usually end up as a bit of a slosh fest. Is it okay to have one or two glasses of wine?

they just say that to cover all the legal bases

I don't really care whether you believe me or not.  I happen to know that both my accounts are true, which is all that matters to me.  If you choose to discount them, then feel free to go ahead and take the risk.  I have only bothered to answer your question because I don't like to think someone might die because I couldn't be faffed to take the time to warn them of the very reasonable risks. Hopefully, even if *you* choose to ignore or "thumbs down" my answer, it may help someone reading it to avoid harm.

A friend of mine died when she drank two glasses of wine and was on antibiotics.  My sister collapsed and passed out after half a pint of beer whilst on ciprofloxacin (a very common antibiotic).  

Really DO ask your pharmacist - they know which ones you can drink with an which you can't.  Don't risk your health without being sure - it's just not worth it.  Just tell people, if they're nosey enough to ask, that you have a throat infection.  That's not shameful (not that most diseases are, but I assume that you don't want to tell people because of where the infection is, rather than because you want to be thought of as immortal!).

It depends on WHAT kind of antibiotics;

but in general, 1 - 2 glasses of wine doesn't hurt;

if anything happens, it is the reduction of the antibiotics strength and it allows the bug (s) to grow faster.

So if you must, take the antibiotics with plenty of water/fluid, 2 - 3 hours before the wine.

depending on what medication you are taking the antibiotics will slow or speed up your bloodflow in your body. drinking thins out you blood, in doing so hurts the prosecess you are tring to accomplish while on medication. in some cases death is the out come. most cases is that you will not get better but worse. if you drink while on medication and nothing happened to you buy a lottery ticket and split it with me.

It's not a good idea to get drunk whilst you're on antibiotics, but I think this idea that the two don't mix all started a long while ago in  - of all places - VD Clinics. Patients were told "No Alcohol" simply because as soon as they'd had a few drinks it was that much harder to say "NO!" if the offer of stray s*x appeared on the near horizon - and one of the most important things during the treatment of ALL STDs is the "No s*x" rule ! ! !

Sounds daft I know - but TRUE ! ! !

Its not a good idea. the antibiotics and alcohol when mixed together can cause poisoning

Its actually a fallacy that you cant drink on antibiotics. There are only two that you shouldnt drink while taking, one is FLAGYL and I'm sorry but I can't remember the other one. The reason people think you cant is because it was a myth started by doctors. Apparently many years ago antibiotics were mostly used to treat sexually transmitted infections and doctors found that when people had a few drinks they forgot they were not supposed to sleep with anyone until the infection cleared up. Doctors basically invented the story to stop the transmission of STDs. There was a big article on the radio about it the other day.

you should be able to drink water or soda and no one should say anything

and by the way a slosh fest sounds bad for you while recoveing from an illness

Alcohol mixed with any medication is really not a good idea. The alcohol will reduce the effectiveness of the medications, and could possibly cause a severely BAD reaction.

Read the label on your meds, and talk to the doctor or pharmacist. They'll be able to tell you for sure whether or not you can have ANY alcohol with your medication.

i believe the main reason that you should not drink with anti biotics is because they attack the yeast of an infection to let your bodies natural antibodies attack and heal you,so if you drinkyou put more yeast into your bloodstream thus making the antibiotics useless so you are unwell for longer than you need to be.

of course you can-you just get a bad hangover and get drunk quicker!!!! (unless your taking metronidazole!!!!) its a myth that you cant drink on tablets

You really shouldn't drink at all while on antibiotics.... here's a list of what you may experience:

    *  nausea,

    * vomiting,

    * convulsions,

    * abdominal cramps,

    * headaches,

    * fast heart rate and

    * Flushing.

One or two glasses of wine might be ok... unless you are one of the following antibiotics. If you are, you shouldn't drink at all:

# Metronidazole

# Tinidazole

# furazolidone (Furoxone),

# griseofulvin (Grisactin),

# Antimalarial Quinacrine (Atabrine)

alcohol lessens the effects of the antibiotics. also, alcohol and antibiotics together will lessen the effects of birth control, so be careful.

a few glasses should be okay, but from what i have been told, alcohol cancels out the effects of the antibiotic. so whats more important to you: get better, or get drunk...

It is OK to drink provided you do not drink in a quantity sufficient too vomit up the medication. So yes - some glasses of wine should be fine.
