  1. The shape of the straw causes it become lodged in the trachea of many kinds animals who may eat it.  Since it is plastic, they also cannot digest it and it make get caught in their stomach or colon.  This is a very common rule at may zoos.  Some zoos have special straws that are wider, flexible, and made out of a digestible corn product.

  2. Because people throw them on the ground, they get blown into the animal enclosures and the animals could swallow them. I suppose that would be a problem with all kinds of litter, but straws are quite stiff plastic and could do a lot of damage to an unwary animal's innards.

  3. Two words: intestinal blockage :( Toronto Zoo has the same policy.

  4. there would be no straws in the animal's natural habitat!

  5. un-neccisary garbage...

i don't know why more places don't have straws... riiight.. they care more about money than the enviroment...
