Why can't you pump your own gas in NJ?

There are a couple of states like that.  I think it is an effort by the gas station lobby to get the law passed so they can charge full service.  I believe their argument was that the average person does not understand how to do it properly and would create a dangerous situation.  

Again, I think it's because they want to charge more.  It does however, stop drive-offs without paying.
